Package Theft in America: What the Data Shows

  • by

1 in 4 Americans have experienced package theft

A 2025 Security.org report found that approximately 64 million Americans have had a package stolen at some point. In the last three months alone, 9 million adults reported a theft incident.

37 million packages stolen each year

Security.org also estimates that around 37 million packages are stolen across the United States annually. The combined value of these losses reaches more than $8 billion, with an average value of $222 per stolen package.

Some estimates place the problem even higher

A separate 2025 study by SafeWise suggests the real number could be closer to 104 million stolen packages per year, costing consumers $14.9 billion and retailers another $22 billion. That is a combined annual impact of nearly $37 billion.

Traditional Security Methods Are Not Enough

A peer reviewed study titled “Porch Pirates: Examining Unattended Package Theft through Crime Script Analysis” found that common security tools such as cameras, doorbells, fences, and even neighborhood watch programs have little impact on reducing package theft when packages are left in plain sight.

Researchers concluded that the most effective strategies are:

  • Removing the package from visibility
  • Concealing packages behind barriers
  • Delivering to locked containers or secure drop systems

In simple terms, if a package is visible and unattended, it is vulnerable.

Residents Know Secure Systems Work

A Vivint survey of apartment renters reported that:

  • 37 percent had a package stolen in the past year
  • Only 22 percent had access to a smart locker or secure package room
  • 84 percent believed a secure package system would significantly reduce theft

This shows both the demand for and confidence in secure delivery solutions… even though most people do not yet have access to them.

Why a Secure Drop Box Makes Sense

While there are currently no major nationwide studies comparing porch drops directly to secure drop boxes, the research overwhelmingly supports one key point:

The safest delivery is the one that removes the package from sight immediately.

Every study agrees on this.
Every theft trend aligns with it.
And every homeowner who has lost a package knows the frustration.

A secure, controlled-access drop system eliminates the threat by removing the target altogether.

How Hatch@Home Fits Into the Solution

Hatch@Home was designed around the core principle the data confirms:

Packages are safest when they are delivered inside the home, behind a secure barrier, and out of sight from the moment they arrive.

Our compact secure drop box moves the delivery from your porch to a protected interior space, preventing theft and damage while keeping your home fully secure.

With package theft costing Americans tens of billions of dollars each year, solutions like Hatch@Home are not just convenient. They are becoming essential.

It’s Not Just Packages, It’s Personal

Package theft is more than an inconvenience. It often means losing something meaningful.

When a delivery goes missing, it is not always a simple replacement Amazon box. Many families receive:

  • Birthday presents for their children
  • Holiday gifts from loved ones
  • Important medication
  • Sentimental keepsakes
  • Handmade items from family and friends
  • Time-sensitive work equipment
  • Food deliveries for special occasions

These are the deliveries that cannot be replaced with a refund button.

Studies show that over 30 percent of stolen packages contain gifts, and more than 20 percent contain important or time-sensitive items. For many households, a stolen package is not just a financial loss, it is an emotional one.

A child waiting for a birthday gift.
A parent awaiting essential medications.
A family counting on something special for a holiday gathering.

When these items disappear, the impact is felt far beyond the cost.

This is one of the biggest reasons homeowners are turning to secure delivery solutions. It is not just about stopping theft. It is about protecting the moments, memories, and milestones inside those boxes.

Hatch@Home ensures that important deliveries are brought safely inside the home the moment they arrive, where they remain protected until the homeowner is ready to retrieve them.
